What Is a Hybrid Car?
A hybrid car combines two power sources (a petrol engine and an electric motor) to deliver efficient, reliable performance for Australian drivers. By seamlessly switching between electric power and petrol power, hybrid vehicles offer improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and smoother city driving. In this guide, we’ll explain what a hybrid car is, how it works, the difference between hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, what fuel hybrid cars use, and why Toyota hybrids lead the way.
Understanding Hybrid CarsA hybrid car (or hybrid electric vehicle) uses both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to move the vehicle. Together, these systems create a balanced approach to performance and efficiency. The electric motor assists the petrol engine at low speeds or during acceleration, drawing on a battery pack that stores electrical energy. This process reduces fuel consumption and enhances fuel economy.
Toyota hybrid vehicles are designed to automatically switch between electric power and petrol power as needed. In stop-start traffic or low-speed driving, they can operate in electric mode, using no petrol at all. At higher speeds, the petrol engine takes over to provide maximum power and maintain battery charge.
How Does a Hybrid Car Work?A hybrid electric vehicle integrates several key components:
Internal Combustion Engine: The traditional petrol engine powers the vehicle during highway driving or when more energy is needed. Electric Motor: The electric traction motor assists the engine, helping the car accelerate and maintain speed efficiently. Battery Pack: The traction battery pack stores electrical energy generated through regenerative braking and the petrol engine. Power Electronics Controller: This manages how energy flows between the battery power, electric motor, and petrol engine.During braking, the system captures kinetic energy and converts it into electrical energy to recharge the hybrid battery. This process, known as regenerative braking, improves fuel efficiency and reduces wear on brake components.
Toyota’s advanced hybrid technology combines these elements to optimise performance in all conditions, from city driving to long highway trips.
What is the Difference Between a Hybrid Car and an Electric Car?Understanding the differences between hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and fully electric vehicles (EVs) can help you choose the right option for your lifestyle.
Hybrid Vs Plug-in Hybrid Vs Fully Electric Hybrid Vehicles:Use a petrol engine and an electric motor. They self-charge through regenerative braking and the engine itself. No external charging is needed.
Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles:Also known as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, these have larger batteries that can be charged from an external power source. They can travel longer distances using only electric driving before switching to petrol.
Fully Electric Vehicles:Also called battery electric vehicles, these run solely on electrical energy stored in lithium-ion batteries. They need external charging and have no fuel tank or combustion engine.
In simple terms, hybrids use less fuel, plug-in hybrids use both electricity and petrol or diesel, and electric cars use no fuel at all. Each offers different advantages depending on your driving range, access to charging, and driving habits.
What Fuel Does a Hybrid Car Use?Most hybrid cars in Australia use traditional petrol. The electric motor assists the petrol engine to save fuel and lower running costs. Some rare models use diesel engines, but petrol hybrids remain the most common.
The system automatically balances battery power and petrol power to achieve better fuel economy. Drivers don’t need to plug in a Toyota hybrid; it recharges itself during driving and braking. However, plug-in hybrids use both petrol or diesel and electrical energy, depending on battery charge.
Whether driving in electric mode or with petrol power, Toyota hybrids are designed to improve fuel economy and lower emissions compared with conventional cars.
What Is a Toyota Hybrid Car?A Toyota hybrid car combines a petrol engine and one or more electric motors through Toyota’s globally proven hybrid systems. Each model is designed to deliver smooth, efficient performance — balancing power, fuel economy, and reliability for Australian drivers.

2024 TGRA Scholarship Series Kicks off at Sydney Motorsport Park in April
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Australia (TGRA) Scholarship Series is back in 2024 to support and help nurture the next generation of Australian motorsport champions, following a highly successful debut season in 2023.
The TGRA Scholarship Series provides an opportunity for young aspiring professional drivers to hone their circuit driving skills in a safe and exciting environment, behind the wheel of a Toyota 86 race car.
Drivers and teams will have the chance to test their mettle across five rounds over the course of the year, starting with the standalone event at Sydney Motorsport Park on April 14 which coincides with the season launch of the TGRA GR CUP (formerly TGRA 86 Series).
The Scholarship Series then travels across the country with events at the South Australian Motorsport Series at The Bend Motorsport Park in late May, followed by a trip to the Phillip Island GP Circuit for the Phillip Island Super Sprint in June and the SpeedSeries at the Queensland Raceway in early August.
The final round will take place at Sandown Raceway in August as part of the Victorian State Racing Series.
Following the conclusion of the racing rounds five drivers will be selected to participate in the Scholarship Series Evaluation Day to be held at the Norwell Motorplex in Queensland in September.
Selected candidates will participate in a one-day evaluation event where they will undergo a series of tests across a number of disciplines, with the winner receiving a fully funded drive in the TGRA GR CUP round at the legendary Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst.
Toyota Australia Chief Marketing Officer Vin Naidoo said the TGRA Scholarship Series provided a fantastic opportunity for up-and-coming race drivers to learn and develop in an accessible setting.
“The fantastic response we received from the inaugural TGRA Scholarship Series in 2023 made it an easy decision to bring this grassroots competition back for the 2024 season, which has received massive interest from potential competitors,” Mr Naidoo said.

Toyota Upgrades Yaris Cross With New Technology, Safety Features, and Sharper Styling
Toyota has given its Yaris Cross small SUV a significant technology boost with the upgraded range featuring the latest generation multimedia and Toyota Safety Sense1 suite of driver assistance technologies.
Alongside the increase in technology comes minor exterior and interior styling tweaks, along with increased comfort and convenience features.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the upgraded Yaris Cross delivered on the lifestyle needs of its customers.
“Since its launch in late 2020, the Yaris Cross has proven a popular choice with customers providing a strong mix of style, performance and practical functionality,” Mr Hanley said.
“Now with the substantial improvements in safety and multimedia technology, along with its hybrid powertrain, it offers even greater value and more appeal whether for daily use around town or getting out into the country on the weekend,” he said.
The Yaris Cross is offered in four front-wheel drive variants including entry-level GX and mid-range GXL, and a pair of top-of-the-range Urban and GR Sport that cater to different styling tastes.
All-wheel drive versions are offered in three grades, GX, GXL and Urban.
Headlining the changes is the latest generation multimedia system that offers a larger 8-inch touchscreen display – previously 7-inch – cloud-based and embedded satellite navigation2, wireless Apple CarPlay®3 and Android AutoTM4 compatibility, Bluetooth®5 connectivity, DAB+ radio6 and a USB-C audio jack.
The USB charging ports have also been upgraded to USB-C with two outlets, standard across the range to keep devices fully powered.
All models now also feature a full 7-inch digital instrument cluster that offers a choice of nine display patterns across three themes of Casual, Smart and Sporty.
The upgraded Yaris Cross offers the latest in safety technology too with the new generation Toyota Safety Sense1 suite of driver assistance features.
The autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety system now recognizes motorcycles and oncoming vehicles in addition to cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles ahead, and offers enhanced intersection collision avoidance (daylight only) and emergency steering assist (daylight only).
Further improvements to its active cruise control and lane trace assist functionality and new cameras and sensors that operate over a wider area, designed to provide even greater safety for all road users.
The Yaris Cross GXL grade and above also gain a new parking support brake with front and rear parking sensors and safe exit assist functionality for the blind spot monitor1.
Toyota has also enhanced comfort and convenience with the GX versions gaining sunvisor mirror lights, two rear grab handles, a soft armrest for the centre console with GXL models now featuring rear side, as well as rear privacy glass.
Styling changes have been kept to a minimum with a new design upper grille and seat trim pattern for all models except GR Sport, a large rear side spoiler for all variants, and new colour 18-inch alloy wheels for the Urban grade.
There have also been some changes in the colour availability with the Yaris Cross now offered in a choice of seven single colours including Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Ink, Atomic Rush, Latte, Mineral Blue and Massive Grey7.
Urban grades are also offered with a choice of four two-tone colourways that combine Frosted White, Atomic Rush, Latte or Massive Grey with a black roof7.
All FWD Yaris Cross versions are powered by a smooth and refined 1.5-litre hybrid system that combines a 67kW/120Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW/141Nm motor generator and 4.3Ahr lithium-ion battery to offer a combined maximum output of 85kW.
All-wheel drive models gain an additional 3.9kW/52Nm rear motor generator mounted on the rear axle to provide additional traction in slippery conditions.
The AWD system operates automatically to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels according to road conditions from 100 per cent drive through the front wheels to 40 per cent to the front and 60 per cent to the rear.
All-wheel drive variants also feature a Trail Mode to further improve off-tarmac capability, with the system automatically braking a slipping or freely rotating wheel to ensure drive torque is directed to the wheels with the most traction at all times.
A multi-link rear suspension – compared to the FWD versions’ torsion beam – also provides more agile handling and greater ride comfort on rough surfaces with all models using a tried and true MacPherson front suspension.
All Yaris Cross versions are covered by the Toyota Warranty Advantage8, consisting of a five-year/unlimited kilometre term with capped-price servicing for the first five years/75,000km (whichever comes first) and each 12-month/15,000km service costing $250.9

Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia Kicks off 2024 Arc Season With Rally of Canberra Victory
Defending Australian Rally Championship (ARC) champions Harry Bates and Coral Taylor have continued their 2023 winning form, taking out the opening round of the 2024 championship at the Rally of Canberra.
Bates and Taylor started their title defence with a commanding performance behind the wheel of the GR Yaris Rally2 which made its Australian debut on the weekend, after a delayed start which saw Saturday’s racing cancelled due to heavy rain.
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Australia (TGRA) team proved too strong for the competition with Bates and Taylor winning all six stages including the all-important Galvaniize Insurance Power Stage, ending up over a minute ahead of TGRA teammates Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin in second place.
Piloting the new GR Yaris Rally2 for the first time, Bates and Taylor shot out to a 30-second lead after just two stages, extending their lead to 40 seconds by the end of the morning’s racing.
The top two placings mirror the final standings of the ARC in 2023, with Harry and Taylor narrowly edging out brother Lewis and McLoughlin in the final race of the season in the ACT last November.
Harry Bates said the Rally of Canberra proved the perfect start for the TGRA team in their new car.
“Coral and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the ARC season – our pace was consistent all day, and to deliver that performance all the way through to the Power Stage was a satisfying feeling,” he said.
“Conditions were definitely difficult, however I’ve now spent plenty of time driving in the wet in Canberra which helped deliver this win.
“It was particularly satisfying knowing that the international TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team were watching closely – this is only the third GR Yaris Rally2 chassis that has been built and the first time it has competed in Australia.
“I couldn’t be happier with how the new Rally2 performed, and can’t wait to spend more time with it over the course of the season.”
The GR Yaris Rally2 is Toyota’s first factory-built rally car homologated for WRC2 competition, and is available for customers across the world to purchase for use in WRC2 and national championships.
The 2024 ARC heads west from May 17-19 for round two, with the Forest Rally set to wow spectators over a weekend of thrilling racing based out of the picturesque town of Nannup located in the southwestern corner of Western Australia.

Toyota’s Hybrid Electric Deliveries Double as RAV4 Sets Sales Records
RAV4 has topped Toyota’s sales charts as surging deliveries across the board, especially for Hybrid Electric variants, have enabled Toyota to drive down customer wait times for multiple vehicles across its range.
Record March volumes for RAV4 were instrumental in Toyota’s deliveries of electrified vehicles (HEV, BEV) doubling (+104.7%) in the first-quarter to 24,722 cars and SUVs compared with 12,075 vehicles in the same period last year.
As a result, Toyota’s electrified share reached a new high of 44 per cent for the first three months with the brand’s total volume accelerating by 37.4 per cent to a market-leading total of 56,238 new vehicles.
RAV4, Corolla, Camry, Kluger and Corolla Cross all set new first-quarter records for Hybrid Electric sales.
Improved first-quarter supply has also benefited customers of non-Hybrid Electric models, including HiLux 4×4, LandCruiser 70 Series, LandCruiser 300 Series, HiAce, Fortuner and Yaris Cross.
In March, Toyota’s sales volume of 18,961 vehicles included 9,347 electrified vehicles, representing a record share of 49.3 per cent.
RAV4 was dominant, cracking 5,000 sales for the first time. Of these, 93.3 per cent or 4,728 cars were Hybrid Electric – also a record for any month.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the latest Hybrid Electric sales figures confirmed that last year’s official sales results reflected constraints on supply rather than the healthy underlying demand.
“Now that supply has vastly improved for Toyota, there are clear indications of a resurgence in Hybrid Electric demand here in Australia and also in markets like Europe and the United States,” Mr Hanley said.
“That’s because consumers increasingly regard Hybrid Electric models as providing practical, capable and affordable vehicles compared to petrol variants that help cut their carbon footprint while reducing fuel bills – and they retain strong resale values,” he said.
Mr Hanley said Toyota was particularly focused on further reducing customer wait times for popular models with many vehicles such as RAV4 Hybrid Electric models now averaging six months or less, while HiLux 4×4 is just four months and LandCruiser 300 Series has come down to seven months.

Upgraded Toyota Hilux Range Arrives in Australia with V-Active Technology
The upgraded Toyota HiLux range has officially gone on sale in Australia, bringing with it new V-Active technology on select double-cab 4×4 variants, refreshed exterior styling and additional specification that bring valuable enhancements for customers.
Pricing for the new HiLux range starts from $26,475 plus on-road costs for the entry-level 4×2 WorkMate single-cab chassis, while V-Active technology is available starting with the 4×4 SR double-cab chassis from $54,130 plus on-roads.1
Along with other specification upgrades, the addition of V-Active technology comes with a price premium of as little as $590, providing excellent value for customers.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the enhanced HiLux range brought welcome enhancements to the range that ensure it remains a popular choice for tradespeople and adventure-focused customers alike.
“Rugged reliability and incredible capability have ensured the Toyota HiLux has been a favourite choice for a vast range of customers needing a quality pick-up for work or play,” Mr Hanley said.
“The addition of V-Active for a small price premium, along with other valuable specification and styling improvements ensure the HiLux is more desirable than it has ever been.”
Available on select 4×4 double-cab SR, SR5 grades as well as the luxurious Rogue, V-Active technology adds a motor generator, 48-volt battery and DC/DC converter to the tried-and-true 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain and six-speed automatic transmission, bringing benefits to fuel economy, powertrain smoothness and off-road ability.
The addition of V-Active technology allows for the fitment of a stop-start system to the turbo-diesel engine which plays a role in helping reduce fuel consumption by up to approximately 10 per cent2 compared to 2.8-litre engines without V-Active technology.
The 48-volt system makes the stop-start system impressively smooth and seamless, with a significant reduction in vibrations when restarting the engine compared to an engine not fitted with V-Active technology. The speed of the engine restart is also noticeably short, adding to the smooth nature of the start-stop system.
Fitting a 48-volt system also allows the engine to be switched off for longer than a typical internal-combustion engine when stopped in traffic, with owners able to choose from either a ‘Normal’ or ‘Long’ setting which increases the time the engine is switched off while the air conditioning is running.
Engine idling speed is reduced in V-Active technology grades, reduced from 720rpm to 600rpm.
Braking energy is recovered by the motor generator when decelerating, which contributes to a natural braking feeling to make driving easier. When accelerating, the motor generator can contribute power assistance in areas of lower engine efficiency to increase responsiveness and make acceleration smoother.
HiLux variants equipped with V-Active technology add Multi-Terrain Select, which includes six selectable modes that enhance wheel traction in a range of road surfaces.
When in high range, MTS can be set to Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud and Deep Snow, while low range offers Auto, Sand, Mud and Rock modes to optimally deploy power and maximise traction.
The motor generator unit has been positioned high in the engine bay to ensure the V-Active technology system retains the excellent off-road ability of the HiLux.
All core HiLux grades with the exception of the WorkMate and SR single-cab and petrol variants gain a new front-end visual refresh which includes new front bumpers and a honeycomb mesh grille.
At the rear, WorkMate, SR, SR5 and GR Sport pick-ups offer a gloss black rear bumper while the Rogue sports a unique dark grey finish.
SR5 grades add dark-finished LED headlamps, gloss black exterior mirrors, door handles, tailgate handle and powder-coated sports bar for pick-up body styles.
Additional convenience is provided for all pick-up grades with the fitment of a tailgate damper with lift assist, which consists of a gas strut and steel cable. SR double-cab pick-ups with automatic transmissions add front and rear parking sensors.
Double-cab automatic SR5 grades gain a wireless charger3 which is also applied to the Rogue and GR Sport flagship along with two rear USB-C ports for greater charging capability.

New RALLY2 and Upgraded GR Yaris Pair to Make Public Debut at Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix Display
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GR Garage will play host to two exciting new race-bred vehicles making their public debut on Australian soil at the 2024 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix, reaffirming the link between Toyota GR vehicles and their motorsport-derived counterparts.
On display for fans to view from March 21 – March 24, situated in the Fan Zone – behind PIT Exit, the GR Garage will show off the new GR Yaris Rally2 car that will be campaigned by the TGRA Rally Team in the 2024 Australian Rally Championship (ARC) alongside the upgraded GR Yaris, as well as an exclusive ‘race the clock’ reaction time challenge—a Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix first.
Toyota Australia Chief Marketing Officer Vin Naidoo said the GR Garage was a great opportunity for fans to get up close and personal with the latest Toyota vehicles featuring true motorsport DNA.
“TOYOTA GAZOO Racing is all about taking the learnings from extreme motorsport competition and applying that to our road cars, making for exhilarating driving characteristics,” Mr Naidoo said.
“Fans attending the 2024 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne this week will get the chance to see both aspects of the GR brand alongside each other, with the first Australian public display of the factory-built GR Yaris Rally2 and updated GR Yaris road car, sharing the spotlight.”
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Australia (TGRA) Rally Team, who took the top two places in the 2023 ARC competition, will campaign two examples of the new factory-built GR Yaris Rally2 in the upcoming 2024 season at the hands of Harry and Lewis Bates and their co-drivers, Coral Taylor and Anthony McLoughlin.
The new GR Yaris Rally2 cars will replace the Australian-designed and built GR Yaris AP4s that spurred the TGRA Rally Team to two consecutive driver’s and co-driver’s championship titles, while also giving Toyota the past two manufacturers’ titles.
Homologated for WRC2 competition, the GR Yaris Rally2 is Toyota’s first factory-built rally car and is available for customers across the world to buy for use in WRC2 and national championship competitions.
Like the GR Yaris AP4 engineered and built by Neal Bates Motorsport, the GR Yaris Rally2 employs a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, driving all four wheels via a five-speed sequential transmission.
Also on display will be the upgraded GR Yaris hot hatch, brought to Australia for the first time ahead of its local launch in 2025.
The revised GR Yaris extracts even more power from its potent 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, raising outputs by 24kW to 224kW at 6500rpm, with a strong 400Nm of torque (+30Nm) on tap from 3250-4600rpm.
It will also be available for the first time with an eight-speed automatic transmission which has been developed through hardcore use in motorsport and optimised for dynamic driving.
The automatic transmission senses the driver’s accelerator and brake operation to anticipate gear shifts and provide lightning-fast gear changes.
Visual updates have been made inside and out, including tilting the dashboard and multimedia system towards the driver by 15 per cent to improve operability.
The 2024 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix commences on March 21 and concludes with the final race on March 24.

First Australian bz4x Delivered to Customer in Canberra
Toyota Australia’s debut battery electric vehicle, the bZ4X SUV, is now in the hands of its first owner following a customer handover event in the nation’s capital.
The first example of Toyota’s all-electric SUV – an all-wheel-drive bZ4X – was delivered to Canberra couple Ali and Nafiseh Lashkari, with Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley and bZ4X Chief Engineer Masaya Uchiyama present at Canberra Toyota to hand over the new vehicle to the Lashkaris.
The all-new bZ4X draws on Toyota’s decades-long expertise in hybrid-electric powertrain technology to deliver a vehicle with sharp performance, zero tailpipe emissions and signature Toyota durability.
As a current Toyota hybrid owner, Mr Lashkari said he wanted to wait until Toyota released its first EV before making the transition to full-electric power.
“This is about choosing the car that aligns with my values, and this car basically aligns with all the vision and values I was looking for,” Mr Lashkari said.
“I wanted a sustainable solution which is an electric car, and I was looking for a manufacturer to give me the confidence that this car will work for me for a long time, so I was happy to wait for Toyota to bring this car to market.
“I wanted to have the opportunity to buy a Toyota bZ4X, because as I mentioned, I am a loyal customer to Toyota due to good experiences and my previous purchases.”
Mr Lashkari wanted to express gratitude in particular to Canberra Toyota – Phillip General Manager Amir Hayati, who he said provided invaluable support in securing the purchase of the first bZ4X.
The Lashkaris chose the all-wheel-drive bZ4X variant in part thanks its ability to travel off-road, facilitated by the X-Mode off-road traction control system which offers two specialised modes to navigate a range of terrain.
Mr Lashkari’s experience as an owner of a Camry and RAV4 hybrid gave him assurance of the quality and service that comes with Toyota ownership and was excited to become an EV owner for the first time.
He plans to use the bZ4X primarily for daily use including trips to and from his job where he works as a civil engineer, going to the shops and weekend adventures with family, with plans to charge the vehicle at home.
At the event, Mr Hanley said the launch of the bZ4X marked the start of an exciting new chapter in Toyota’s history.
“Toyota has paved the way with hybrid-electric vehicles over many years, introducing fuel-saving technology to countless Australian homes,” Mr Hanley said.
“The introduction of the bZ4X shows Toyota’s commitment to offering customers a broad range of powertrain technologies including hybrid, battery electric and fuel-cell electric, ensuring no-one is left behind on the path towards decarbonisation.
“This marks an exciting time for Toyota, as the first of many battery-electric vehicles to be introduced in years to come.”
The two-variant bZ4X range is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, paired to a compact and lightweight 71.4kWh battery capable of 150kW DC charging.
The bZ4X line-up is available in Australia priced from $66,000 plus on-road costs1 for the front-wheel-drive grade.
