Toyota Australia has today announced that it will initiate a safety recall involving C-HR petrol variants produced between October 2019 and March 2023 (inclusive). There are approximately 14,480 vehicles involved in the Australian market.

The involved vehicles are equipped with a high pressure fuel pump. The fuel pump has a plunger that moves down in a cylinder to create a vacuum, which brings in fuel through a fuel inlet control valve and up in the cylinder to create pressure which sends fuel to the engine through the check valve. Due to insufficient press fitting of certain parts in the high pressure fuel pump, operation over time may cause (1) the cylinder to move and create wear between the cylinder and pump body resulting in increased stress to both aforementioned valves; or (2) the valve seat to move within the pump body resulting in valve seat wear and increased stress to the inlet control valve.

The increased stress on the above valves can cause a crack to develop at the weld for the affected valve(s), which could lead to a fuel leak and potential fuel odour. In the presence of an ignition source, a fuel leak can result in an increased risk of a fire.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will inspect and, if required, replace the high pressure fuel pump.

Inspection of the fuel pump will take approximately 30 minutes. If required, replacement of the fuel pump will take approximately 2 hours. However, depending on the Dealer’s work schedule, owners may be required to make the vehicle available for a longer period of time.

Toyota Australia will provide all owners of involved vehicles details of this safety recall campaign by SMS, email and/or mail to their last known address. Customers are asked to keep their contact details up to date with Toyota so future communications can be received.
